I think I agree with you - the charts of "available attention" do look extremely compelling, but then statistics are very easy to present in a way pleasing to one's line of argument.

It feels to me as though perhaps we tapped the cognitive surplus when we invented blogging and we're now at a type of plateau where people are prepared to create plenty (tumblr, social media writ large) but they also like to sit and stare at stuff too. I don't feel like we're in line for an explosion of the creating part.
